On May 12, Niagara’s Francophone community mobilized in large numbers with great heart and energy. In fact, they actively participated in the consultation meeting hosted by the Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario (AFO).
More than fifty people gathered at the Centre de santé communautaire Hamilton Niagara (CSCHN) in Welland. The crowd included representatives from Niagara’s interagency network as well as local residents. Their main goal was to contribute to the AFO’s États généraux roadmap, which will guide the province’s Francophonie over the coming years.

An Interactive Approach for Niagara’s Francophone Community
This consultation session took place in an atmosphere of genuine camaraderie and collaboration. Furthermore, it was driven by incredible energy and a shared desire to advance ideas. Seated around lively discussion tables, Niagara’s Francophone community shared their local, on-the-ground realities. Therefore, this event reminded everyone of the true power of grassroots dialogue.
In addition, the meeting was facilitated by a well-known and highly respected face in the region. Peter Hominuk, Executive Director of the AFO and a proud Welland native, led the session. Alongside his support team, he skillfully guided the discussions. He successfully balanced professional structure with warm, shared smiles.

Four Major Challenges at the Heart of Discussions
During the morning, participants shared their ideas, concerns, and potential solutions. Their discussions focused on four fundamental themes:
-
Immigration and Identity: Achieving successful immigration, combating assimilation, and overcoming identity challenges. The main goal is to better welcome newcomers and strengthen the sense of belonging here in Niagara.
-
French-Language Services: Enhancing the completeness, navigation, and accessibility of service delivery. As a result, living in French on a daily basis will become simpler for everyone.
-
The Community Network: Developing consolidated structures and boosting coordination between organizations. This will allow local agencies to join forces and better support local Francophone vitality.
-
Governance: Establishing clear provincial and regional governance to steer tomorrow’s major structural transformations.

A Strong and Engaged Community
The true strength of this Niagara milestone lies in the incredible synergy of its local leaders. For this reason, we extend a huge thank you to Venture Niagara (Entreprise Niagara), Centre communautaire Le Griffon, and the Centre de santé communautaire Hamilton Niagara. We warmly thank them for their welcome, logistical support, and deep commitment to this event. Indeed, when communities respond with this much enthusiasm, the entire movement gains monumental momentum!

What is the Next Step?
The passionate discussions that filled this morning are just the beginning. Following this province-wide regional tour, the AFO will compile all feedback and insights. Consequently, they will be able to draft a Live Blanc and a Community Action Plan.

This strategic roadmap will be rolled out over the coming years. It will serve to ensure the growth, thriving future, and sustainability of our French Ontario. In short, Niagara’s Francophone community has proudly laid its stone to pave the way for this future journey!
