It’s called the “green and white”: green for our summers, white for our winters. The Franco-Ontarian flag, turning 50 on September 25, is a powerful symbol of pride. Embraced by the Francophone population, it now flies across Ontario, including at Queen’s Park in Toronto, home of the province’s Legislative Assembly.
In the Niagara region, this celebration will shine a spotlight on a rich and diverse Francophone community, made up of many cultures and backgrounds, united by the French language and a shared passion for keeping traditions alive.
From September 20 to 27, 2025, the region will come alive with a week of festivities bringing together Francophones and Francophiles in a spirit of celebration and community.
A diverse program across the region’s cities
Flag-raising ceremonies, community events, and performances will take place in St. Catharines, Welland, Niagara Falls, and Port Colborne in the days surrounding September 25. Additional activities, organized by various community partners, will be added in the coming weeks to celebrate the Francophonie in all its colours and diversity at the heart of Niagara.
The Niagara Inter-Agency, in collaboration with its 35 Francophone member organizations, is promoting the regional events through a special 50th anniversary page on the Vivre à Niagara website.
The public is invited to consult the full program on Vivre à Niagara to register and take part in the various celebrations. Agencies and schools are also welcome to contact Entreprise Niagara at Suem@ventureniagara.com to add their public events to the special 50th anniversary page.

A Half-Century of History and Pride
The Franco-Ontarian flag was raised for the first time on September 25, 1975, at Laurentian University in Sudbury. In 2001, it became an official emblem of Ontario. In 2010, September 25 was officially designated Franco-Ontarian Day. Each year, organizations, schools, and Francophone communities across Niagara gather to raise the flag and proudly celebrate our cultural richness and Franco-Ontarian colours.
