The Francophone population gradually increased over the years and to this day is known as &#8220;French Town&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welland.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of Welland<\/a> is a centre for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.francophoniedesameriques.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre de la francophonies des Am\u00e9rique<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Francophones are dispersed throughout all twelve municipalities in Niagara, and their number is highest in Welland, followed by\u00a0 St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Port Colborne.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wc-shortcodes-row wc-shortcodes-item wc-shortcodes-clearfix\">\n<div class=\"wc-shortcodes-column wc-shortcodes-content wc-shortcodes-two-third wc-shortcodes-column-first \">\n<h3><cite>French Language Services Act<\/cite><\/h3>\n<p>You can access French language services from all 28 ministries of the provincial government via Service Ontario and from all federal ministries via Service Canada. In Ontario, access to French language services is an entrenched right under the <a href=\"https:\/\/csfontario.ca\/en\/loi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French Language Services Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This includes things like getting a driver\u2019s license or birth certificate. All information regarding government programs is available in French as well.<\/p>\n<p>However, in order to obtain French language services and information, you must present yourself to a government office situated in or near a designated area. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/government-services-french\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">designated area<\/a> consists of an area where Francophones make up at least 10% of the population. In a city, French language services are offered where Francophone citizens number at least 5,000.<\/p>\n<p>The cities of Port Colborne and Welland are designated areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wc-shortcodes-column wc-shortcodes-content wc-shortcodes-one-third wc-shortcodes-column-last \">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.francophoniedesameriques.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-321 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/vivreaniagara.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/centre-de-la-francophonie-des-ameriques.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wc-shortcodes-box wc-shortcodes-item wc-shortcodes-content wc-shortcodes-clearfix wc-shortcodes-box-primary \" style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<h3>Franco-Ontarian Day<\/h3>\n<p>Franco-Ontarian Day was officially named in 2010 and is celebrated each September 25th. The Franco-Ontarian flag became the symbol of the Franco-Ontarian community in 2001.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/franco-ontarian-history#section-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read the Franco-Ontarian Emblem Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2014, a flag mast at Welland Civic Square is reserved for the Franco-Ontarian flag.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, flag raising ceremonies are held in Welland and at Niagara Region headquarters.
